LED face masks have travelled from clinic back rooms to celebrity feeds and bathroom shelves, glowing red, blue and everything in between. Behind the futuristic look sits a genuine and much-studied idea: that specific colours of light can gently nudge skin cells to behave differently. So what does each colour actually do, what can you realistically expect, and is the version in a clinic any better than the mask you can buy online? Here is a measured, jargon-free guide.

What is LED light therapy?

LED (light-emitting diode) light therapy — also called photobiomodulation or low-level light therapy — uses specific wavelengths of visible and near-infrared light to influence how skin cells behave. Unlike a laser or IPL, it does not heat, wound or ablate the skin. The light is low-energy and non-thermal, which is exactly why it carries no downtime.

The idea rests on a quiet piece of cell biology. Structures inside your cells, particularly in the mitochondria that generate their energy, absorb particular wavelengths of light and respond to them — by ramping up energy production, calming inflammatory signals, or, in the case of blue light, disrupting the bacteria involved in acne. The approach has roots in NASA research on plant growth and wound healing, and has since been adapted for skin. Importantly, LED contains no ultraviolet light, so it does not tan, burn or carry UV’s skin-cancer risk.

Why the colour matters

The colour of the light is really shorthand for its wavelength, and wavelength governs two things: how deep the light travels into the skin, and which cells it interacts with along the way. Shorter wavelengths, like blue, stay close to the surface. Longer ones — red, then near-infrared — reach progressively deeper into the skin.

Blue light: the acne wavelength

Near-infrared: reaching deeper

Near-infrared light sits just beyond what the eye can see, so a near-infrared setting may look dim even when it is working. Because it is the longest wavelength, it penetrates the deepest, and it is most studied for wound healing, deeper inflammation and tissue repair. It is very commonly combined with red light, the two wavelengths complementing each other across different depths of skin.

Amber, green and the rest — a note of caution

You will also see amber (yellow), green and even white settings marketed for everything from redness to pigmentation. Amber has some support for calming sensitive, reddened skin, but for most of these other colours the evidence is thinner and the marketing tends to run ahead of the science. A device that promises a different colour for every conceivable concern is making a sales pitch as much as a clinical claim. The best-evidenced wavelengths remain blue, red and near-infrared.

What results are realistic?

This is where honest expectations matter. LED light therapy is best understood as a gentle, supportive treatment, not a dramatic one. Most people who benefit notice calmer, clearer, slightly more even skin over a course of sessions — not an overnight change. A few realistic truths to hold onto:

  • It rewards consistency, not intensity. A one-off session under a mask will do very little; a regular course over several weeks is where any benefit comes from.

Is it safe, and who should avoid it?

For most people LED is one of the lowest-risk treatments in aesthetics. It is painless, involves no downtime, and because it contains no UV it suits a wide range of skin tones with little risk of the pigment changes that heat-based devices can cause. Mild, brief redness or warmth is the most common after-effect.

There are still sensible cautions. Seek advice from a clinician first if you:

  • Take photosensitising medication — for example isotretinoin, some antibiotics, or the herbal remedy St John’s Wort
  • Have a light-sensitive condition such as lupus, or a history of light-triggered migraines or seizures
  • Are pregnant — evidence is limited, so many clinics take a precautionary approach
  • Have any undiagnosed, new or changing skin lesion in the area — this should be assessed properly first, as LED is not a treatment for skin cancer or unexplained marks
